Layering is a technique that allows 3D reality into a 2D image through the use of foreground, mid-ground, and background to give the illusion of depth. You can combine layering with other techniques like depth of field, lighting, and background to produce spectacular photos. There are four ways to create layers:
- Objects
- place out of focus objects in the foreground
- shoot through vegetation like plants, grasses, or tree leaves
- Movement
- Use blurred movement
- Stop the motion
- People
- Use a person in the foreground
- Put your subject in the mid-ground
- Scenes within scenes
- Build scenes within scenes
- Shoot a street with people at tables, passersby, animals, trees, etc
