White Buffalo Calf Woman

Long ago, about 2,000 years ago there was a woman who came from the clouds in the form of a White Buffalo. She went into the Lakota people and taught them seven sacred ceremonies and brought them a medicine bundle. She lived amongst the people for four days and then disappeared. The ceremonies she brought were:

  • Adoption (Making Family) Ceremony
  • Sundance Ceremony
  • Sweat Lodge Ceremony
  • Naming Ceremony
  • Healing Ceremony
  • Marriage Ceremony
  • Vision Quest

She taught the elders and their people ways to worship so they will be better heard by the Creator. She taught them ritualistic dances, prayers, and songs to go along with these new rituals all because they had lost the ability to communicate with the Creator. She brought a bundle with her that contained a ceremonial pipe known as the White Buffalo Calf Pipe and taught that it was to be used in conjunction with the rituals to pray.

In the bundle was the pipe now called the White Buffalo Calf Pipe after the woman. She showed them how to use it properly by inhaling burning tobacco from the pipe as she walked around the lodge in a circle four times to illustrate the circle of life and its continuity. She left the bundle and promised to come back in the future to bring peace and straighten out the misery and suffering and to collect the bundle.

Years ago there was a white bison male calf born in the Northern United States and was brought to the Winnipeg Zoo to live. I believe that this was the beginning of the prophesy’s fulfillment. Perhaps the White Buffalo Calf Woman’s arrival is close at hand and soon she will return to help the native tribes who believe and have looked after the bundle and followed what she laid out for them.
